Teeth Whitening in Istanbul, Turkey

Quick answer

Teeth whitening uses a peroxide gel to lighten the natural shade of your teeth. In our Istanbul clinic, a supervised in-office session takes about an hour and typically lightens teeth by a few shades; a custom take-home kit gives a gentler, gradual result. Whitening only works on natural enamel (not crowns, veneers or fillings) and is best after a check-up confirms your teeth and gums are healthy.

Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Whitening is the simplest, most conservative way to brighten a smile; it lifts stain without touching the tooth itself. It works best on healthy teeth with yellow or brown staining from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. Grey or tetracycline-banded teeth respond far less predictably, and if you have decay, gum disease or exposed roots we treat those first. Where whitening alone won’t reach the shade you want, veneers or a smile makeover may be the honest answer, and we’ll say so rather than sell you a result we can’t deliver.

In-office or take-home: which is right for you?

Both use the same family of peroxide gels; the difference is concentration, speed and control. In-office whitening is done in the chair in about an hour and gives a visible lift the same day, ideal before a wedding or a trip. A custom take-home kit uses lower-strength gel in trays moulded to your teeth, brightening gradually over one to two weeks with less sensitivity and a lower cost. Many patients get the best value by combining the two.

Is professional whitening safe?

Under a dentist’s supervision, whitening has a strong safety record. The most common side effects are short-lived tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation, which fade within a day or two. Because the gum and lips are protected and the gel strength is matched to your teeth, supervised whitening is gentler than guessing with an over-the-counter kit. We always start with a quick check so nothing is whitened over hidden decay or a leaking filling.

What whitening cannot change

Whitening only lightens natural enamel. Crowns, veneers, bonding and tooth-coloured fillings keep their original colour, so if these show when you smile we plan the sequence carefully: often whitening first, then matching new restorations to the brighter shade. It also doesn’t change the shape or alignment of teeth. Being clear about these limits up front is how we avoid disappointment and keep your result looking natural.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes. Professional whitening supervised by a dentist is considered safe, and the American Dental Association recognises peroxide-based whitening as effective. The most common side effects are temporary tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation, which usually settle within a day or two. We check your teeth and gums first so the gel is used safely.
In-office or take-home: which is better?
Neither is "better"; they suit different needs. In-office whitening gives a visible lift the same day, while a custom take-home kit works more gradually and costs less. Many patients combine the two, starting with an in-office session and then using trays to fine-tune and top up at home.
How long do the results last?
Typically six months to two or three years, depending on your diet and habits. Coffee, red wine, tea and smoking dull the result fastest. A short top-up with your take-home trays keeps your smile bright without repeating the full treatment.
Will whitening work on crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening gel only lightens natural enamel, so any crowns, veneers or tooth-coloured fillings keep their original shade. If you have visible restorations we plan around this and, where needed, replace them to match your newly whitened teeth. It is worth discussing before you whiten.
Am I a good candidate for whitening?
Whitening works best on healthy teeth with yellow or brown surface staining. Grey or tetracycline-type stains respond poorly, and untreated decay or gum disease should be sorted first. We generally don't whiten during pregnancy or for under-18s, and we'll tell you honestly if veneers would give a better result.
Does whitening damage tooth enamel?
There is no good evidence that professional whitening at supervised concentrations permanently harms enamel. Any sensitivity is temporary and caused by the gel passing through the tooth, not by weakening it. Shop-bought kits used incorrectly carry more risk, which is why we prefer a dentist-supervised approach.
Can I whiten before veneers or a smile makeover?
Yes, and it is often the sensible order. We usually whiten your natural teeth first to set the target shade, then match any veneers or crowns to that colour. That way your restorations and natural teeth stay in harmony for years.
