What Happens After You Fly Home

Written by Dr. Yusuf İşlerLast updated:

In short

If something comes up after you fly home, message me on WhatsApp and send a photo. If it needs an examination or treatment, see a dentist near you; the summary I give you before you leave tells them what was done to which tooth. With severe pain, swelling in your face or a fever, don’t wait for my reply.

What to take home with you

If a dentist at home ever looks at your teeth, they will want to know:

  • which treatment was done on which tooth, and when,
  • the material used (porcelain, zirconia or composite),
  • for an implant, its brand and size, because the parts that fit on top depend on the brand,
  • your X-rays from before and after treatment, if any were taken.

Before you fly home I give you copies of your X-rays and a written summary that covers all of this. I can prepare it in English or German, and if your dentist has questions, I can answer them in either language. For an insurance claim I can also give you an invoice; whether your insurer pays is a question for them. If you need treatment at home, ask your dentist about the cost first.

If something comes up

Message me on WhatsApp (+90 538 215 71 54). Tell me what happened and how long it has been going on, and send a photo of the area. If the photo is enough, I tell you what to do; if it isn’t, I say whether you need to see a dentist.

The most common situations:

  • A veneer or crown has come off. Keep it and message me. If it isn’t broken, it can often be bonded back on, and a dentist at home can do that.
  • A veneer or crown has chipped or broken. Keep the piece. Composite can often be repaired in the mouth; porcelain usually has to be remade.
  • Your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold. This is common in the first days after bonding and usually settles by itself. If it doesn’t, or it gets worse, message me.
  • One tooth touches first when you bite. The veneer or crown may be slightly high. A small adjustment fixes it, and a dentist at home can do it.
  • There is swelling, bleeding or discharge around an implant, or the tooth on an implant feels loose. Don’t wait: message me and see a dentist.

When not to wait

If you have severe pain, swelling in your face or neck, a fever or difficulty swallowing, don’t wait for my reply. See a dentist straight away, or go to A&E if the swelling is spreading or you find it hard to swallow or breathe. Then message me. In the UK, NHS 111 can tell you where to get urgent dental care.

Check-ups

Veneers, crowns and implants are looked after like your own teeth: brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups. You can have your check-ups with your dentist at home. If you come back to Istanbul, I can see you then as well.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to come back to Istanbul if there’s a problem?
It depends on the problem. From your photo I can tell you whether your dentist at home can deal with it or whether it can wait until your next visit.

If you have a question, send me a WhatsApp message. I read them myself.
